Another season yielding extremely small crops but with fruit of high quality and intensity. The grapes were hand harvested from 36 year old vines on our Uley vineyard at the northern end of the Piccadilly Valley on 7 March. Baumé at harvest 13.2 degrees, pH 3.48, titratable acid 6.6g/litre.
After cooling overnight, the grapes were destemmed into small open fermenters about 20% being included as whole bunches. Cold maceration for 4 days was followed by yeast inoculation and fermentation with regular hand plunging throughout. Gently pressed off skins after 10 days, the wine was partially settled in tank and then transferred to new and used French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation and maturation. Bottled 10 February 2020. Unfiltered and unfined. Alcohol 13.0%
Displays an attractive, intense crimson colour, bright berry and cherry fruits, floral, spicy and earthy notes, fine, silky tannins and a soft, lingering palate. This wine has great cellaring potential but can be enjoyed as a young wine with its lovely fruit characters and early complexity.
